A new poster, leaflet and animated film campaign has been launched encouraging motorcyclists to ‘save their skin’. The aim is to remind young riders of the importance of wearing proper riding kit while on a motorcycle.
The images feature a young male on the ground after a motorcycle accident. The image is manipulated so that one half of the rider is clad in his everyday wear and the other is wearing the correct kit.
It brilliantly illustrates how biking clothing can mean the difference between a bruise and a break, or a mere graze and a skin graft. There’s some more detailed advice here from leading RTA safety charity Brake.
Wearing the correct gear is clearly one of the key things a biker can do to ensure their physical safety on the roads. In addition to this, from a legal perspective, having the correct clothing will benefit a rider if they are injured in an accident that wasn’t their fault and wish to pursue compensation.
Much like always wearing a seatbelt when travelling by car, wearing a helmet and other safety equipment when on a motorbike means the rider is less likely to be responsible for contributory negligence, in theory enabling them to pursue the maximum amount of fair compensation that they deserve.
Travelling by motorcycle can be an exhilarating and exciting experience, but riders should remember they are in a high risk category of road user. Despite only making up 1% of UK traffic they account for 19% of all road deaths so it’s imperative that they take more care when travelling and wear the correct kit at all times.
