Each year Express Solicitors organise a summer placement scheme for law students in the North West, to help fast-track them on their way into a legal working environment. The Express summer scholarship scheme is designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain experience working in a legal environment and to assist in helping students develop those skills necessary for a career in law such as technical aptitude, dedication and professionalism.
This year, both Abby-Elle Healy and Eden McCaughie were lucky enough to be offered a summer placement opportunity at Express Solicitors after they impressed with a written cover letter, a technical personal injury test, and a competency based interview.
During their summer placement at Express Solicitors, the pair had the opportunity to take enquiries in the firm’s new client team (NCT) and attend partner reviews. They also spent time shadowing fee earners in the, Occupier’s & Public liability, Road Traffic Accident, Costs and Employer’s liability departments.

Abby-Elle has gained a Law degree from Keele University and has also completed the LPC at BPP Law School, Manchester. When asked what she enjoyed about the scholarship scheme, she commented: “I have enjoyed the opportunity to work in the New Client Team, specifically building a rapport with clients and guiding them through the initial first stages of the process. In addition I was also fortunate enough to attend Court whilst shadowing in the RTA Department and visited Chambers whilst shadowing in the OL/PL Department.”
Eden McCaughie has completed a Law with Criminology degree at the University of Liverpool and plans to study for the LPC in the near future. When asked what she has gained from the placement, Eden commented: “The opportunity to shadow fee-earners from different departments has been a great experience and I was able to get involved in a variety of different tasks.”
“During my time shadowing in the OL/PL department I was given the opportunity to listen in on a conference and found that everyone has been extremely helpful in taking the time to talk me through the different stages of a claim and explain procedures.”
After demonstrating a great ability working in the new client team, both Abby-Elle and Eden have been offered permanent positions in the department.
