£400 raised for Forever Manchester

IMG_4557Three employees recently accepted the challenge of abseiling down Lancashire Cricket ground 120ft building. Becki Stevens explains why she did it.

On the 18th March 2016 I joined Maxine Holgate and Muneeb Karolia in abseiling 120ft from the top of Lancashire Cricket Ground. “Why”? I was asked as I asked for sponsorship. “You’re too old for those kinds of capers!” my son said.

So here is the reason why; Four years ago I left a very controlling relationship with little to no confidence. I decided to change this and made myself a list of things I wanted to achieve before I was 50 (No Gavin I am not there yet!!)

3 years ago I did my first 10k run as part of a relay team in the Manchester Marathon, last year I joined a team from Express in the Survival of the Fittest 10k Assault course, over the last 3 years I have assisted in the restoration of an original Mini Mayfair where I learnt to bang rivets, lay carpet, replace windscreen and battery and manage my own football team.

I have always wanted to abseil and was fortunate to be a part of the Express team last month. As the day approached the nerves kicked in, I don’t think I slept a minute the night before. As I got in the car with Maxine, Muneeb and Andy who kindly drove us my stomach was somersaulting.

Maxine and I were up first and as we stood at the top of the building we watched a 6ft 7 gent prepare for decent. This gentleman had previously been telling us about all his previous challenge achievements. We expected this would be no issue for him, how wrong could we be?! After a lot of tears, sweating, squealing and many expletives he finally made his decent. Maxine & I just looked at each other and thought we have to do better than that! In typical girl power style we chatted our way through the whole process, smiling and laughing all the way. Muneeb’s decent was also completely impressive & fuss free especially as he had to go it alone.

I was so proud of our team and myself, I am now ready for the next challenge but what will it be? Rally driving, Bake off, Manchester to Blackpool cycle……

Who knows but one thing I do know is that you never know what life will throw at you but you are stronger than you think you are and can achieve anything you set your mind to with enough determination. “I can’t” no longer factors in my thinking now it’s “when can I”?!

Thank you Express for this amazing opportunity.
