More about Maria Penny
Maria Penny qualified as a solicitor in 2007, having completed her LLB (Hons) Law degree and LPC in Manchester. She joined Express Solicitors as a Senior Associate Solicitor in our RTA department in June 2021.
Since qualifying Maria has specialised in personal injury litigation, and has handled a broad range of cases from rear-end shunts to chronic pain and clinical negligence cases, and always puts her clients first. Maria has a particular interest in cases involving acquired brain injury, and also industrial disease cases involving asbestos exposure. One of her memorable cases concerned a client with mesothelioma, caused by asbestos exposure in the 1960s when working at a well-known car manufacturer’s plant, and many hours were spent tracking down potential witnesses, and the relevant insurer, before ultimately securing financial compensation for her client.
Another notable case involved clinical negligence, with damages secured in the sum of £1 million. Maria also worked extensively on the reported case of Yetkin v Mahmood and London Borough of Newham involving an RTA wherein the client, as a pedestrian, suffered catastrophic injuries; the matter reached the Court of Appeal and was distinguished from the House of Lords case of Gorringe v Calderdale MBC, and damages were awarded to the Claimant.
Maria is passionate about ensuring access to justice for her clients, establishing a rapport with each client at the outset is key, and ensures that a practical and straightforward approach can be taken both in terms of managing the client’s expectations and progressing their case through to conclusion.
Maria was a finalist in the Eclipse Proclaim Awards for young solicitor of the year.
Maria then went on to work in Queensland Australia for two years and is now back at Express Solicitors as of 2025.
Outside of work, Maria enjoys spending time with her young family camping and walking in the High Peak and the Lakes.
Maria also, when time permits with 3 boys, enjoys acting in her spare time, and has worked as a supporting artist on both television and film, and was noted to be on screen on more than one occasion in the Downton Abbey film, and indeed appeared in the official handbook and in the Daily Mail no less!
Maria likes to raise funds for charity whenever possible and has previously completed Tough Mudder, a 13 mile assault course, to raise vital funds for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Maria has completed many 10k runs for the Christie and for Melanoma UK/Factor 50. Having had a close relative and friend suffer from and, thankfully, beat breast cancer, Maria recently completed 100k in March 2021 to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now.
