Our clients Kayleigh and Charlie are the focus of the latest Rebuilding Shattered Lives campaign film from APIL (Association of Personal Injury Lawyers).

After what Kayleigh describes as a ‘catalogue of errors’ while she was in labour, Charlie was starved of oxygen for 11 minutes, suffered irreversible brain damage and was born with cerebral palsy.

Working with the clinical negligence team at Express, Kayleigh was able to rebuild hers and her son’s lives with the compensation she received.

Partner and Head of Clinical Negligence at Express Solicitors, Tanzeela Aslam has been working with APIL for some time and is also a Special Interest Group Co-ordinator for the organisation.

She said: “We formed a great relationship with Kayleigh and enabled her to access justice, using no win no fee, and help rebuild her life. Mothers go into hospital expecting the best from the NHS but unfortunately there are too many failings in maternity care.

“Our work is often criticised, but it helps to increase patient safety – our clients need us to advocate and fight for them when they or their loved ones have been needlessly injured. This negligence often has life-long impact on our clients’ ability to work, walk and look after themselves and their families.

“I believe in promoting the sharing of ideas and collaborative efforts to support APIL’s campaigns and Charlie’s story is an important part of that. It’s not just about achieving justice for individuals, but also educating society about clinical negligence. By dispelling ‘compensation culture’ myths and highlighting avoidable mistakes, we can ensure that patient safety prevails. It is through this understanding and accountability that we can foster a safer healthcare environment for everyone.”
