Piers Bazely joined Express Solicitors in February 2026 as an Associate Costs Draftsman and brings with him 28 years’ experience in costs law. He has a thorough and practical understanding of all aspects of costs, including the drafting of bills of costs, managing both receiving‑party and paying‑party matters, the preparation of points of dispute and replies, and work connected with detailed assessment. He also has substantial experience of the costs budgeting regime, including the preparation, negotiation and ongoing management of budgets throughout the life of a case.
His experience spans a wide variety of dispute types, including road traffic accident claims, occupational and employers’ liability litigation, and disease claims such as noise induced hearing loss, vibration white finger and asbestos‑related mesothelioma. In addition, he has worked on product liability matters, subsidence claims, consumer, contractual and commercial disputes, clinical negligence claims and finance‑related litigation, giving him a well‑rounded and adaptable approach to costs across both routine and complex cases.
Piers has a strong background in leadership and professional development. During his career he has successfully set up and managed two in‑house Costs Teams and has held senior positions within the costs departments of major global law firms. Alongside his management responsibilities, he has played an active role in training, delivering structured in‑house sessions and informal guidance on a wide range of costs topics for both costs professionals and fee earners, with a focus on improving technical understanding and procedural compliance.
He specialises in claimant bill drafting and has assisted with the preparation of bills in high‑profile and legally significant cases, including Denton v TH White Limited [2014] and WM Morrison Supermarkets plc v Various Claimants [2020] UKSC 12. In addition to his technical expertise, Piers is recognised as a clear and effective communicator. He is adept at explaining complex costs issues in a straightforward and practical manner, working collaboratively with solicitors and clients to ensure that costs strategies are well understood and aligned with the broader objectives of each case.
