To mark the International Day of Sign Languages, Express Solicitors welcomed Deaf Unity to deliver a British Sign Language taster session for our colleagues.

The interactive session introduced attendees to British Sign Language and gave them the opportunity to learn practical signs that could support more inclusive communication in the workplace and wider community.

Alongside learning some introductory BSL, colleagues gained a greater understanding of the barriers deaf people can face in education, employment and career progression. The session encouraged everyone to consider how greater awareness and small changes to communication can help make workplaces and services more accessible.

Deaf Unity works to empower deaf people at important stages of their education and careers, including moving on from school, entering the workforce and progressing in the workplace. The organisation also provides online BSL training and digital resources to support deaf people and communities across the UK.

The taster session was open to colleagues from across the firm and provided an accessible introduction to BSL, regardless of previous experience. Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions and took the opportunity to develop their understanding.

Creating an inclusive workplace means listening, learning and recognising the different communication needs of the people around us. Sessions like this help our colleagues build useful skills while supporting our commitment to making Express Solicitors a welcoming and accessible organisation.

This is particularly important as we support clients from a wide range of backgrounds and circumstances. Improving our awareness helps us consider how we communicate and ensure that people feel heard, respected and supported when accessing our legal services.

Thank you to Deaf Unity for delivering such an informative and engaging session. We look forward to continuing to create opportunities for colleagues to learn about accessibility, challenge barriers and contribute to a more inclusive workplace.
