What happened?
Craig met Jade in 2014 and the pair built a happy life together, marrying in 2016 and raising two young sons, Clay and Axel. Jade was a dedicated teacher who was loved by her pupils, colleagues and the wider school community.
In August 2023, Jade underwent a brain scan which revealed devastating news. She spent nine nights in hospital before returning home, where she was placed on palliative care.
Despite her deteriorating condition, Jade remained focused on her family. Craig recalls carrying her downstairs on their son’s sixth birthday so she could watch him open his presents. Just two days later, Jade passed away.
Following her death, Craig discovered that opportunities to diagnose Jade’s cancer had been missed over a number of years, dating back to 2014.
What was the impact on Craig and his family?
Losing Jade had a devastating impact on the entire family.
Craig suddenly found himself raising two young children alone while dealing with the grief of losing his wife.
Beyond the emotional loss, the family lost a devoted wife, mother and teacher. Jade was known for her kindness, her commitment to helping others and the positive influence she had on the children she taught.
Craig was left asking difficult questions about whether more could have been done and whether Jade’s death could have been prevented if her cancer had been identified sooner.
What our clients say
How did we help?
Before she passed away, Jade had encouraged Craig to seek legal advice. Without her prompting, he says he would never have pursued a claim.
Craig instructed Express Solicitors, where Sarah Smith and the Clinical Negligence team handled his case.
The team carried out a detailed investigation into Jade’s medical care, examining the opportunities that had been missed to diagnose her condition earlier.
As a result of the evidence gathered, the NHS admitted liability for Jade’s death, a significant outcome that provided long-awaited acknowledgement of what had happened.
Craig described this admission as the first genuine apology he had received following Jade’s passing.
Throughout the claim, Sarah Smith and her team supported Craig, helping him navigate an incredibly difficult process while seeking answers on behalf of his family.
What was the outcome?
Following investigations by Sarah Smith and Express Solicitors’ Clinical Negligence team, the NHS admitted liability for Jade’s death. For Craig, this was the first apology he had received following the loss of his wife.
The claim has given Craig answers he otherwise may never have received, revealing that opportunities to diagnose Jade’s cancer had allegedly been missed over a number of years. For Craig, making a personal injury claim is about far more than compensation. It’s about accountability, recognition of what happened to Jade and ensuring responsibility is acknowledged.
