Report Reveals Breast Cancer Undiagnosed In 61 Patients

An enquiry has revealed that a consultant radiologist failed to diagnose breast cancer in 61 different patients and wrongly gave them the allclear. The errors stem back to 2000 and the report found that 92% of his patients had not been correctly assessed nor undergone ultrasound treatment despite mammograms showing worrying abnormalities.

Consultant Radiologist Excluded From Duty

The consultant in question Dr Glenn Kelly is currently excluded from duty pending disciplinary proceedings. He was practising at Accrington Victoria Hospital Lancashire until 2009. What makes this all the more shocking is that this wasn’t error on the part of a rookie doctor but a consultant radiologist who was not following best practice.

The report also acknowledged governance and trust failings on the part of East Lancashire Hospitals Trust but said women could now be confident in the quality of breast screening at the hospital. The Trust has apologized to the women involved recognising the added stress the incident has heaped on the women already suffering the trauma of breast cancer.

Early Detection Key To Treatment Of Cancer

Early detection is key in the treatment of cancer so these poor women who had their illness undiagnosed must be inconsolable at their situation.

Worryingly despite technological innovations and increased awareness of breast cancer the illness’s incidence rate has increased by 3.65% over the past ten years.  It is now the most common form of cancer in the UK and 1 in every 8 women will suffer from it at some point in their lives.
